Project Overview

Converting a Barn Into a Personal Training Gym

Our customers, the owners of Intent 91, approached us with the task of turning a 200-year-old barn into a personal training gym in Worthing.

Our journey with the Intent 91 overall consisted of approximately a year which included running through plans and ideas to ensure we fully understood their vision. This project was going to need a lot of work from a reception area, creation of changing rooms and toilets to the main gym area itself. Due to the fact that the Intent 91 building is an old barn, we were keen to incorporate all of its stunning features. Therefore, we worked closely with our suppliers to make sure all the materials were to the top of their specification, yet still in keeping with the building to give it a modern twist.

Reception Desk

For the duration of this project, we carried out a lot of work. Firstly, we built a bespoke reception desk from design ideas the customer had in mind. As a result, we built the main structure our of Howdens kitchen units. The design consisted of white gloss handleless doors and draws as the frontals. A feature we incorporated was a sink as this enabled the team to sell protein shakes and coffees.

Once everything was in place, we moved on to build the face of the desk which would be customer facing. Using 25mm Birch ply, we cut strips and fitted them vertically to create the effect seen in the pictures. The white worktop we installed is made from quartz called Stella Blanco and is 20mm thick. On the underside of the worktop there is a groove which allowed us to fit LED lights to illuminate the desk, providing a modern feel to the building.

Changing Rooms and Toilets

With our customer’s design ideas in mind, we moved on to create the changing rooms and toilets. The design was precise as there was a lot going in to each room. We built the framework out of 4×2 timbers to create the shell of each room, these rooms being one male toilet and one female toilet. In addition to one male changing room and one female changing room. Each of these we plasterboarded and plastered.

The flooring we laid had to be hard wearing due to the number of people using these rooms. Therefore, we used a floor called Evo Core Premium in the main reception area, moving into the hall and including both toilets and changing rooms.

Car Park

In the car park, we built and clad a 12 metre wall in Cedral Anthracite cement board. The Anthracite cladding complimented the exterior colour palette of the gym, whilst also blending in well with the traditional character of the building.
